Is social media to blame for your marital problems?

Like the majority of Americans, you and your spouse likely have multiple social media accounts. This can include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat. Although maintaining a presence on social media might seem harmless, your marriage might suffer as a result.

Three ways social media could lead to an unhappy marriage

A healthy marriage takes a great deal of continued dedication and effort, but in some cases, sharing your thoughts and pictures online can open the door for trouble.

Spending too much time on social media could lead to:

  • Disconnect. It takes time to build and maintain a strong relationship, so whether you are at home or out on a date, attention focused on social media accounts, rather than making memories with each other, could lead to feelings of having lost your partner’s interest.
  • A jealous spouse. Conflict may arise when your spouse focuses their attention elsewhere. If they receive flirty comments or racy pictures from someone of the opposite sex, that could add doubts or feelings of inadequacy to a stressed relationship.
  • Cheating. People tend to present their best selves to the public. As a result, it is easy to become attracted to someone else’s flawless appearance, positive attitude and perceived success, and sharing life with someone is virtually always messier than the perfect images people portray of themselves online.

Although you and your spouse might want to keep your social media accounts, you might choose to establish some boundaries. Rather than spending time posting about your day, you and your partner might rather focus on building your future – together.
