So, your child joined the basketball team. Or the dance line, or perhaps even the marching band. Whatever activity it may be, this new passion of theirs will take up a considerable amount of time – in both your child’s life and yours.

Adjusting to this schedule is hard enough, but it could be even more so when divorced parents share custody of their children. Here are a few things that co-parents must keep in mind.

Can you modify the custody agreement?

Yes! As your child’s life and needs change, you and your co-parent can revisit the terms of your custody agreement

You will certainly have to adjust your parenting schedule to factor in the commitments of your child’s extracurricular activities. However, that may also mean reevaluating:

  • Your parenting time
  • Your personal schedule
  • Finances for enrollment and supplies

These extracurriculars take up time, money and energy. They can become a priority in your child’s life, so you must consider all of the details carefully. As the parents and guardians, it will also be your responsibility to ensure your child’s schedule remains structured and balanced appropriately, so your child does not become overwhelmed.

Change is always challenging

Your family may be long-accustomed to the current custody arrangement. Not only will you have to negotiate modifications to your arrangement, but you will also have to get used to these changes.

It can be a stressful time for all of you as you adapt to a new busy schedule and a new parenting arrangement. You and your co-parent should take time to prepare, as well as help your child prepare for these changes.
