Adjusting to singlehood again after divorce

On Behalf of | Apr 26, 2023 | Divorce |

The time after the divorce can be just as stressful as the process of ending your marriage in North Carolina. You must adjust to the new reality and situation – as well as being single once again.

The status of being single again might be a relief for some and a stressor for others. Regardless, it can still take time to get used to singlehood again. Here are some helpful tips to consider as you adapt to this new chapter of your life.

1. Look for the opportunities

It is normal to grieve the relationship after a divorce, as well as the plans and expectations you had for the future while you were married. While it is also important to feel these emotions in order to process them and let them pass, you must be wary of letting them overwhelm you.

Even while processing grief and the other complex emotions involved in the divorce, you can take a positive outlook as well. For many people, being single provides them with opportunities, such as:

  • Spending more time with family and friends
  • Having the freedom to make your own choices
  • Enjoying more financial freedom, in certain respects

Put simply, you have more time to yourself. On that note, more time to yourself provides another opportunity.

2. Focus on you – and your future

After a divorce, you have the power and time to focus on yourself and your personal goals. Perhaps you put off trying new hobbies, or traveling to new places because of time or financial constraints during the marriage. If you are newly single, you can prioritize these personal goals and dreams. Some people may consider:

  • Going back to school
  • Changing jobs
  • Attending exercise classes
  • Learning new skills
  • Engaging in old passions and hobbies

Searching for opportunities can help you realize and achieve such goals. This can also help you shift your focus from the past to the future.

It is not selfish to focus on yourself. You are taking time to learn more about yourself and grow accustomed to life after divorce. It can be challenging to move forward after ending your marriage, whether or not it was amicable. Concentrating on your future and your needs can help you make great strides to overcome the stress of divorce.
