All Proceeds Will Support Area Foster Children

RALEIGH, NC – August 21, 2019 – The Friends of Wake Guardian Ad Litem (The Friends) is pleased to announce their 2nd annual “Light the Way” gala will take place on Thursday, November 21, 2019.

The Friends is a local, all volunteer run non-profit dedicated to supporting the approximately 700 children in foster or kinship care here in the Triangle region.

“These children are displaced, taken away from family and siblings and often struggling in school through no fault of their own,” said Carrie Haub, Chair of The Friends’ Board of Directors. “They have hopes and dreams and want the same opportunities as every other child. As a community, we can make an impact and begin to close the gaps, allowing these children to struggle a little less and dream a little more.”

By providing academic supports, such as tutoring and school supplies, along with activities like summer camp, The Friends strives to ensure every child is set up for success in school and life.

Gala Details

The event will take place at the newly renovated 1705 East venue in Raleigh. The approximately 300 guests expected will enjoy an evening of inspiration and fun, including a silent auction, wine pull and more. Auction items range from trips to sports memorabilia to jewelry.

The keynote speaker this year will be Ashley Rhodes-Carter, who will share her amazing story of overcoming almost ten years in multiple foster homes, before being adopted at age 12. Despite the struggles of that experience, she was driven by the belief that “education was the one thing nobody can take from me,” and excelled in school.

Ashley has gone on to be a scholarship winner, advocate, foster parent, multiple awardee, and best-seller author.

Sponsors

For the second year in a row, the gala will be hosted by Raleigh Divorce Law Firm. “The work The Friends leads in our community really matters because many of the children we support don’t have a sense of belonging,” said Heather Forshey, Owner of Raleigh Divorce Law Firm and a Friends Board member. “Through raising funds and providing supports, we’re helping to plant a seed of hope and give them a chance for a better life.”
